Female management quotas on table

BOSSES who fail to promote women should have their bonuses docked and mandatory gender quotas may be needed, the Federal Government's gender watchdog has said.

Men still monopolise the corner office, according to the latest census of women in leadership to be released today.

Women lead only a dozen of the nation's biggest 500 businesses listed on the stock exchange and chair just 13 of their boards, only a slight improvement on a decade ago.

Men still hold more than nine in every 10 directorships or executive jobs in ASX 500 companies. More than half those companies have all-male boards.

Even in middle-management positions, men outnumber women 15 to one.
