Finals football looms as Magpies continue dominant run

NRRRL: The Lower Clarence Magpies have continued their spirited charge toward the NRRRL Under 18s finals series with a dominant display against Murwillumbah Mustangs.

The Magpies had their foot on the throttle from the opening whistle to jump out to an early lead and maintained the intensity to win the match 42 to 6 at their surrogate home ground of Les Burger Field at Cabarita Beach.

The Magpies muscled up in defence in the first stanza, which has become a feature of their performances this season.

Staring down the barrel of a 30-0 half-time deficit, the Mustangs returned to the field with a renewed vigour to start the second half. But in the same fashion that sees them sitting just five competition points off the top of the table, the Magpies took their defensive efforts to another gear, as well as running in another two tries of their own, before Murwillumbah scored a consolation effort on the siren.

It was another solid performance from the Magpies' star fullback Daine Laurie who netted a double along with Eathan Kapeen and Zac Buttusill. Callan Hollis scored one try while Jacob Cameron-Clarke booted all seven conversion attempts.

The Magpies will now face a tough road test when they play competition leaders Cudgen in the next round. The Magpies are hungry to give Cudgen their first loss.
