Fines, unleaded-free zones to cut petrol sniffing in NT

MORE areas free of unleaded fuel are operating in the Northern Territory.

To stamp out petrol sniffing, the Federal Government this week banned the sale, possession, transport or distribution of unleaded fuel at Tennant Creek, the Threeways Roadhouse, Katherine, Adelaide River, Hayes Creek, Pine Creek, Mary River Roadhouse, Tindal, Nitmiluk and Mataranka.

Aboriginal services have been campaigning for a comprehensive roll-out of low-aromatic fuel zones in these areas for many years.

Anyone breaching the bans will be fined up to $54,000 for each offence.

Petrol sniffing fell 88% in other areas where low-aromatic fuel zones operate.

Central Australian Youth Link-Up Service manager Tristan Ray said the zones could save lives.
