Fire blamed for budget blow-out

A FIRE that destroyed two buildings at the Grafton Aquatic Centre last year will increase pressure on Clarence Valley Council's 2009/2010 Budget, councillors have been told.

At the council's recent budget workshop, it was revealed repairs to the buildings could cost up to $500,000 more than they were insured for.

Clarence Valley Council deputy general manager (civil and corporate) Rob Donges said the $500,000 figure was based on preliminary estimates of per square metre construction costs. He said the actual cost would not be known until tenders were received.
