Fire destroys home at Goonellabah

A Goonellabah home was destroyed by fire overnight

A Newcastle Fire communications spokesman said brigades from Lismore and Goonellabah were called to the home in Eggins Pl at about 12.40 am.

"Fire fighters arrived on scene and found a fibro and tile house well alight," the spokesman said.

The spokesman said fire fighters in breathing apparatus entered the house but found nobody in side.

"The fire was in the front section of the house and roof."

Police, paramedics and the Goonellabah Hazmat unit were called to the scene.

The spokesman said as the house was fibro, the Hazmat unit advised fire fighters to be cautious of asbestos.

A man who was in the house at the time managed to escape the fire.

He was taken to Lismore Base hospital for assessment.

Investigations into the fire are continuing.

Anyone with any information on the fire is asked to call Lismore police on 6626 0599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
