First provisional gradings today

IT'S still a week away from the real fun starting, but Grafton Netball Association's Fiona Gordon can't wait for today's first provisional grading games.

About 50 teams across junior and senior divisions will take to the Bacon Street's Westwood Park courts to decide who will meet who when the official season tips off next week.

The junior fun begins at 12.30pm, with the seniors running from 1.30-4.30pm.

“We will be looking at each of the teams to see what level they are to make sure they go to the right division,” Gordon said.

“I'm really hoping to see some great games and for each grade to be close.”

She said playing numbers remained steady on previous years but she was expecting a spike when the season kicks into gear.

The 2011 Grafton netball season is starting about two weeks ahead of previous campaigns.

“The numbers are about the same as previous years although it's hard to tell at this stage of the season,” Gordon said.

Part of the push for increased exposure comes in the form of an initiative to attract players in the under-5 to 7 age bracket.

“This year we are also running a Net Set Go program which starts next week,” Gordon said.

“It's something that is new and we are very excited about.”
