First step to fixing highway

AFTER years of lobbying to have the Pacific Hwy upgraded to dual carriageway, the Pacific Highway Taskforce is hoping a political pledge to fix the blood-soaked stretch of road will finally be seen through.

On Wednesday, Nationals Leader Warren Truss toured the area with Page Nationals candidate Kevin Hogan to re-affirm a Coalition promise to complete the Pacific Hwy upgrade by the end of this decade - a task he said the current government had little chance of completing on time, with no new money for the project announced in the latest budget.

Taskforce chairman and Clarence Valley Mayor Richie Williamson said, like previous pre-election highway pledges from both sides of politics, the announcement was welcome but the proof would be in the pudding.

"We have always held the view that it doesn't matter who is in gov- ernment at the state or federal level, the lives of the people who use the highway is the most important matter to consider," Cr Williamson said.

Cr Williamson said the taskforce had repeatedly lobbied for both federal and state levels of government to put money on the table for the project and commit to a timeline for completion, which he said seemed to be happening now.

"The commitment that has been announced certainly does show where the money is coming from and commits to a timeline, and the Pacific Highway Taskforce would now like to see this project come to fruition as soon as possible."
