Fitness brings new attitude for Sky Brook
CLASS 3 HCP: An attitude change has been revolutionary for the Dwayne Schmidt-trained Sky Brook who will race in the 6.05pm Young Guns Fight class 3 handicap today after two placings in Ballina last month.
"When I first got her she had a real big attitude, the fitter she's got the better she's got to handle, she's very hard to get back shoes on her, she used to be quite cranky," Schmidt said.
"She's just turned the corner the last few starts and you can even see in her eyes.
"I'm really happy with how she's been training, she's worked really hard," he said.
"Within herself she's very healthy and very fit."
Following the brilliant starts, Schmidt said he thinks the six-year-old mare is a chance of the top spot today.
"From the last two previous efforts she is," he said.
"She was out of form for a long time and she's hit form with a little bit of rain around this weekend it will increase her chances."
Schmidt added that with apprentice jockey Jackson Murphy on the saddle, Sky Brook has come through at the low end of weights at 54.5kg.
Sky Brook took out first and second in November at Ballina with Murphy at the reins.
"Jackson is a very promising young rider, he's got a good attitude towards racing and a good head on his shoulders," Schmidt said.
"He's a nice jockey and polite and I think he will go along way.
"I think he will make the grade as a jockey."
Sky Brook has taken out barrier number 7, which Schmidt said will be a good thing for the mare.
"It wont worry her, I think she will fall out of the barriers and lob into second or third position and wait until she straightened up," he said.
