Fletch retains national title

LES Piper changed his style but nothing could alter the outcome of the Australian middleweight title fight in Melbourne.

Hervey Bay's Jarrod 'Left Jab' Fletcher easily defended his belt for the first time after beating the Gold Coast-based Piper, who is famous for being a brawler, on a unanimous points decision (100-92, 99-91, 99-91) at the end of the 10-round showdown.

Piper was expected to come out all guns blazing like he normally does, but changed tactics and tried to get Fletcher to come to him.

But Fletcher stuck to his game plan of moving in and out while picking off Piper with his famous jab, before setting up his combinations.

The win means the 28-year-old Fletcher has now won all 12 of his professional bouts and a showdown with Garth Wood for the vacant Commonwealth title is on the cards.

Fletcher said he was pleased to get another win under his belt.

"Mate, is was a good win because Les turned up with a different game plan and I had to adjust to it," said Fletcher, who joined the fight-for-pay ranks after the Beijing Olympics.

"We all thought that he would try and knock my block off in the first couple of rounds so you could say that it was different that he didn't do that.

"I wasn't about to get involved with what he wanted though.

"Saying that, it was a solid workout and the body pulled up well."
