Flickr chief launches tourist discovery site

THE founder of worldwide photo-sharing platform Flickr has branched out into a new tech venture, and it has arrived on the Sunshine Coast.

Caterina Fake's www.Findery.com is described as a "social discovery platform" that lets people leave notes, personal accounts and historical information on a map.

An iPhone app has just been launched in Australia, the first of its kind in the world, and there are already a few entries on the Sunshine Coast map.

You can see anything from kayaking spots, surfing at Noosa, an account of a green-ant bite and even a 1928 photo of kids riding a horse to school in the Glasshouse Mountains on the local entries.

Findery aims to help people rediscover the world around them by giving visitors a very personal insight into new places. Notes include personal stories, memories, colourful histories, previews into what's coming and other little known facts. Members can connect with others, or comment on posts, sharing their own experiences with a specific locale.

The notes can be in text, photo, video or sound form. Members can also leave private notes for friends and family.

"Every place has a story, and Findery is about annotating the globe - from Adelaide to Austin," Caterina Fake said. "Whether you're on a trip to somewhere faraway or visiting a town the next county over, you can use Findery to share your story, or let Findery's members tell theirs."
