LETTER: Flood concern

I HOPE that some of the Valley council officers and senior staff have been watching the news reports of flooding in England and the U.S.A. during the northern hemisphere winter.

I attended a function the other afternoon and during a conversation I was informed that mitigation works were not thought to be of a concern to local ratepayers, by either senior management or councillors.

May I hasten to assure you that my company, as a long-term ratepayer, is very concerned with flood mitigation in the Valley.

This council should have been combining with the councils to the north in an attempt to create off-stream storage areas similar to Shannon Creek.

It is not too late to ask for some money from the Feds to at least study the possibility.

It may also be a good idea to let Shannon Creek empty out a bit.

Fill all our other storage, and create a small safety valve.

The cyclone season will be here soon, and the devastation in Fiji and Vanuatu should be warning enough.
