Blazing run lands Central Park Belle win in three-way photo
RACING: When the dust settled and the horses pulled up after the first at Clarence River Jockey Club even veteran race caller Anthony Collins was left scratching his head at the three-way photo finish.
The blue flash of Matthew Bennett on board Central Park Belle ($1.80 fav) streaked up the far outside from the back of the pack at the home turn to narrowly edge out Young Amazon (Luke Rolls, $8) and Shaft of Magic (Terry Treichel, $16) in 1:04.09.
It was a blazing run down the CRJC home straight in the CRJC Kensei Club F&M Maiden Plate (1100 Metres) from the Brett Dodson-trained mare who was racing her first start for the Coffs Harbour stable after joining about three weeks ago from trainer Jason Warren in Victoria.
The win added another victorious chapter to the storied friendship of Dodson and Bennett who have made it a successful partnership on the track.
"I didn't think I was going to have enough metres to catch them there but she definitely has some good ability," Bennett said after the tight finish. "She picked them up pretty easy in the end.
"She just didn't want to get going at the start there, it was a bit sluggish. But once we got about 100m out she started to pick it up, I didn't think we had enough to get it but to her credit she stormed into the line."
In what was a good day for Bennett at the Grafton track he returned to the winners circle two races later after bringing Paul Matts-trained Behest to the front in another tight finish in the Gillespie Plumbing Jacaranda Maiden Handicap (1700m).
