AN "AWKWARD tackle" in a division two rugby league match has left a Bribie Island Warrigals player - a father of six - in a critical condition in the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Andrew Grant, 41, suffered a neck injury during "the normal run of play" in a match against the Beachmere Pelicans at Kandanga on Saturday and was flown to hospital.

A Princess Alexandra Hospital spokeswoman said yesterday Mr Grant remained in a critical but stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.   He underwent emergency surgery on Saturday night which went well, according to Sunshine Coast Gympie Rugby League chief James Ward.

"His surgery was apparently a success," Mr Ward said.

He said there would be no investigation into the tackle, and that the league community was waiting to provide assistance to Mr Grant's family "when the time is right".

"This is a very unfortunate incident and our thoughts are with him and his family at this difficult time," he said.

He said Mr Grant's family had requested privacy while they attempted to come to grips with the news. The match was abandoned after Mr Grant suffered the injury.

It was the 41-year-old's first game playing for the Warrigals this season.

Meantime, in a post on its Facebook page, the Caboolture Junior Rugby League Club has called on the community to keep Mr Grant and his family in their thoughts and prayers.

Several of Mr Grant's children play for the Caboolture club.
