Footy girls prove a hit

BROTHERS Rugby League Club president Mark Kuss couldn't be happier following the first Ladies Football League game to be played at the club's Raceview home ground.

After a tough year where the rugby league club's crowds and gate takings have been below par, Kuss jumped at the chance to bring the gridiron girls to Ipswich.

Mr Kuss said the girls had been training at the club for a few months when he suggested they play a game to coincide with the final Ipswich Rugby League game of the year.

"We viewed this as a good promotion to get a few more people along to the game," Mr Kuss said.

"And it worked; we had our best gate of the year. Having said that it was a top of the table clash and the final game of the year."

The Ipswich-based team, the Western Miners, watched on as "running backs" and "tight ends" for the Brisbane Thunder and the Logan Lightning replaced the halfbacks and front rowers usually seen on Brother Seery Park.

But while the game may have been different, Mr Kuss said the competitive nature wasn't.

"The hits were a lot harder than we expected to see," he said.

"It certainly did create a bit more interest for the club and I think spectators enjoyed it as a spectacle."

Mr Kuss said he hoped the girls would continue their affiliation with Brothers and denied it would steer girls away from playing rugby league.

"Unfortunately there isn't much call for women's league at the moment."
