Julie Bishop trying to repair Indonesian relations
FOREIGN Minister Julie Bishop took a step in the right direction today in ensuring that Australia starts to rebuild a relationship of trust with neighbouring Indonesia.
Minister Bishop joined her counterpart Marty Natalegawa in signing a joint understanding code of conduct more than 300 days after ties were tested following a spying scandal.
Indonesia suspended co-operation on issues of people smuggling, defence and sharing of intelligence after it became known that Australia had tapped the phones of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, his wife and their inner circle.
"Australia's bilateral relationship with Indonesia is one of our most important foreign policy priorities," said Ms Bishop.
"This visit is also an opportunity for me to thank His Excellency, President Yudhoyono, for his outstanding contribution to our bilateral relationship."
