It's cold and flu season but Supermum has other symptoms

COLD and flu season has arrived in the Supermum household.

It's now I need to pay vigilant attention to the pockets of all items going into the wash.

Instead of removing the usual assortment of rocks and boy-attracting odds and ends I hope to prevent the dreaded post wash snowstorm by removing all tissues too.

My 11-year-old son has a cold and has been giving me detailed descriptions of his excess nasal fluids and a run down on how bad he is feeling throughout the day.

I remember the not-so-good old days when my son was a toddler and was sick.

Back then there was no verbal notification on how he was feeling.

I just had to work it out from all the physical signs.

The constant reminders were a snotty nose which was wiped on the nearest thing he had available; his own shirt sleeve, my shirt sleeve, or worse, my bare leg as he toddled past.

Trying to get him to take cough medicine was another challenge, as he would always try to dodge the spoon full of syrup headed his way.

There was lots of grizzling and grumpiness too, but that was usually just coming from me.

In hindsight, maybe they were the good old days.

Listening to my son sniffle and snort away this week has been taking its toll.

After one particularly long and loud sniffling session I told him to get a tissue.

He told me he didn't really need a tissue, he was making those noises to annoy me.

The new boyfriend has also had a cold hanging around for a few weeks now.

Glad to see for him so far it hasn't developed into the dreaded man flu.

I also have been suffering a few sickness symptoms of my own, of which I can blame him but not blame the common cold.

I've had an accelerated heart rate, trouble concentrating and even a slight loss of appetite.

That last one is a big one. My close friends will know a loss of appetite is quite unheard of for me. I don't need to go to a doctor to diagnose my condition though.

I already know what it is, and I am quite happy to suffer through all those symptoms.

I'm simply lovesick.
