LNP's O'Brien begins campaign to replace Truss in Wide Bay

WIDE Bay Liberal National Party candidate Llew O'Brien will ignore polling and not take anything for granted as he looks to successfully replace outgoing MP Warren Truss.

On Sunday as Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called the election for July 2, Mr O'Brien was on the campaign trail at the Gympie South Markets.

In the seat held by Mr Truss with a 13 per cent margin, Mr O'Brien will stand against Labor's Lucy Stanton.

"I'm feeling good and positive about the future," the former police officer said yesterday.

"I look forward to a positive campaign where there will be an obvious focus on jobs and growth for Wide Bay."

Mr O'Brien is not taking any solace in the large margin currently held by Mr Truss.

"I'm absolutely focused on doing my best to prove to the people of Wide Bay that I'm worthy of their vote," he said.

"I don't look at any margins."

Labor challenger Lucy Stanton pledged to listen to voters.

"Finally, it's time for the people of Wide Bay to have their say on getting better representation in Canberra", she said.

"I'm looking forward to campaigning across Wide Bay to get job opportunities happening.

"To advocate for proper internet access, a decent education for our kids, greater protection for our environment and to stop the cuts to healthcare."

With a mammoth 55-day campaign, Mr O'Brien will travel the electorate meeting voters.

"It's going to be a long campaign - everyone has been expecting this and me and my team are ready," he said.
