Foxes make perfect start under Italian

THE pre-season was a disaster, but Leicester City has stunned the doubters by going top of the English Premier League with a 2-0 away win over West Ham.

Following on from the opening-round victory over Sunderland, the Foxes have begun their campaign brilliantly under new manager Claudio Ranieri.

The Italian was appointed just last month after the sacking of Nigel Pearson.

First-half goals to Shinji Okazaki and Riyad Mahrez - his third of the season - was enough to get the three points for Leicester City, which moved ahead of Manchester United at the top on goal difference.

"We surprised West Ham," was Ranieri's succint summation.

After a draw with champion Chelsea last week, Swansea continued its promising start with a 2-0 win over Newcastle.

Bafetembi Gombis and Andre Ayew found the net for the Swans, while long-range shots from Jefferson Montero and Gylfi Sigurdsson hit the woodwork.

Newcastle's cause wasn't helped by having defender Daryl Janmaat sent off shortly before half-time for persistent fouling.

Meanwhile, Everton manager Roberto Martinez called on fans to unite behind the club after the protest against chairman Bill Kenwright and the board reached new heights during the 3-0 away win over Southampton.

Supporters, unhappy about what they say is a lack on investment in the team, organised a plane to fly over the ground trailing a banner with 'Kenwright & Co #time to go' written on it.

Round two will wrap up tomorrow morning when Liverpool hosts newcomer Bournemouth.

Results (home teams first):

  • Aston Villa 0 Man United 1,
  • Southampton 0 Everton 3,
  • Sunderland 1 Norwich 3,
  • Swansea 2 Newcastle 0,
  • Tottenham 2 Stoke City 2,
  • Watford 0 West Brom 0,
  • West Ham 1 Leicester City 2.

Played last night:

  • Crystal Palace v Arsenal,
  • Manchester City v Chelsea.
