French PM aims to be president

MANUEL Valls will resign as French Prime Minister in a bid to be the Socialist candidate for the April-May 2017 presidential election. He will take part in the party's primary next month. "I want to give everything for France,” the 54-year-old said. It came a few days after President Francois Hollande said he would not run. Mr Valls aims to defeat the rise of the far right, which is led by the National Front's Marine Le Pen. Mr Valls is tough on security and immigration and is more popular than Mr Hollande. But the party is deeply divided over its handling of the economy.
