From coast to Ghost - league side brings in reinforcements
RUGBY LEAGUE: A strong recruitment drive from the Grafton Ghosts in the off-season has seen them draw in five players, including three former Lower Clarence Magpies, to fill out a highly competitive backline.
Former Ghosts captain Ryan Binge returns from the Magpies after taking part in their centenary year and he has brought fullback Rob Howard and under 18s second rower James Hughes along with him.
The club is also buzzing about Gold Coast recruits Matt Vidler from the Ormeau Shearers and Jayden Connors who was in the Gold Coast Titans Holden Cup squad.
"We definitely had a big season last year but we were just missing in a few key positions," Ghosts captain coach Ben McLennan said. "We have had a big off-season recruiting the boys and we have come up with the goods and I am really happy with how everything has gone.
The new recruits add a level of depth to the Ghosts side which was lacking at points last year.
"At the moment we've got two or three players in every position - it's going to be a headache, but at least it's a good headache.
Ghosts' president Joe Kinnane said the new found depth at the club will keep players honest to ensure they retain their spot in the side.
"Well you don't want anyone playing with no pressure on them," he said. "If they know the next guy is just waiting in the wings to get a chance in the side they will be forced to play their best football.
Now in his second year as captain coach McLennan has been impressed by the effort of his troops in training.
"We have got plenty of depth, plenty of numbers are turning up to training and everyone is busting their arse and that is all I can ask for," McLennan said.
