Huge interest in Xbox event

THERE is a new game coming to the Xbox One this week and to say people are excited would be an understatement.

Since bursting onto the scene with early access on PC in March, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds has already sold over 20 million copies - despite the game not even being finished.

So not only are people rushing to purchase an incomplete game, but it has been well publicised that the title will have no single-player campaign and the online component ends as soon as you die - there are no second chances.

So how has PUBG managed to build such hype?

Imagine getting to participate in your own version of The Hunger Games and you might understand.

"Our Battle-Royale game mode will put up to 100 players on a remote island for a winner-takes-all showdown where strategic gameplay is as important as shooting skills," the game's website explains.

"Players will enter a last-man-standing battle where they try to locate weapons, vehicles and supplies in a graphically and tactically rich battleground that eventually forces players into a shrinking play zone as they engage in a tense and spectacular fight to the death."

As part of the game, all the of the players start empty-handed and have to find equipment from supply drops.

To celebrate the release of the game on Xbox, the company dropped loot crates around the country, which contained Xbox One X consoles and Elite Controllers, Xbox Live codes, plus PUBG march and game codes.

The only problem was not everyone seemed impressed by Xbox Australia's efforts, with many complaining about the location of the drops and how fast everything disappeared.

Gamers in Melbourne were disappointed that the drop occurred on an inner-city beach, with those arriving complaining nothing was left within half an hour of the post.

Those in Brisbane also had a gripe with the promotion performing a supply drop in a highly populated area.

There was even a suggestion the location was not where the co-ordinates had detailed, which resulted in crowds of people running around a wedding taking place.

Xbox was quick to address those complaints from those unhappy with the way the promotion was run.

"We apologise for anyone that was not able to make it today or missed out on a prize. Upon revealing the locations of the crates, fans arrived on site within minutes and prizes went quickly," Xbox wrote on Facebook.

And while many people missed out on the loot, not everyone was furious at Xbox.

"The salt in these comments is real ... such entitlement," one user wrote.

"There's more salt in these comments than there is on /r/destinythegame ... christ. Chill out. Well done Xbox ANZ! Great promotion," added another.

Despite the anger over the promotion, if the game has the same success on the Xbox as it does on PC, gamers are in for a good time.
