Geitz prepares for World Cup final against NZ
LAURA Geitz will lead the Australian Diamonds into the Netball World Cup final today after the team beat Jamaica 67-56 in Saturday's semi final.
After the Diamonds set up an early five-goal lead, Jamaica brought the Aussies margin back to two, 17-15, at the end of the first quarter.
Australia led at each break with Geitz bringing off an outstanding deflection in the third quarter with the Diamonds up 41-34.
In the last quarter, Geitz was on the bench after Sharni Layton was brought on at goal keeper.
New Zealand beat England 50-39 in the other semi.
Geitz, of Allora, won gold in a dramatic final in Singapore four years ago and since taking over the captaincy has led Australia to a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The grand final between Australia and New Zealand will be in Sydney at 3.20pm Sunday. England and Jamaica will play off for bronze in the early game.
The semi-final win against Jamaica took the Australians win/loss tally to six/one in the past 10 days in Sydney, the only loss was in a round game against New Zealand which ended the Aussies winning streak of 21.
In the late game on Friday night, Geitz played two quarters in the 89-24 victory against Wales.
Australian Diamonds coach Lisa Alexander used 11 of her players in the game. Only goal defence Julie Corletto, one of the best all week, didn't take the court.
