George Pell quizzed by police over sex assault allegations

CARDINAL George Pell has been interviewed by police in relation to allegations of sexual assault.

Victoria Police have confirmed that three officers travelled to Rome last week to meet with Australia's most highly-ranked Catholic figure where he "voluntarily participated" in an interview in regard to the accusations.

"As a result of the interview, further investigations are continuing," Victoria Police wrote in a statement.

"We are not prepared to comment further at the time."

Earlier this year, ABC's 7.30 reported that Cardinal Pell was being investigated in relation to multiple child abuse allegations that grew from information delivered to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Those allegations related to his time as an Archbishop of Melbourne in the 1990s.

At that time, Cardinal Pell's office released a statement saying he "emphatically and unequivocally rejects any allegations of sexual abuse against him".
