Editorial - Friday, July 11: Getting that local vibe

THERE was a case of deja vu with my July Racing Carnival celebrations this year.

On the evening of Ramornie Cup Day I found myself chatting to a lovely group of visitors, only to realise that we had, in fact, met on the same evening 12 months earlier.

Earlier in the day I ran into someone else I had met for the first time at Ramornie Cup Day in 2013 and we jokingly laughed about it being our one-year anniversary. The same thing had already happened on South Grafton Cup Day on Sunday.

The thing that hit home from all of this is how at home in Grafton it made me feel.

Having been here for only 18 months, I think I still have a few decades before I could even think about calling myself a local but I love the fact I have started to develop little Clarence Valley traditions of my own, especially those centred around this amazing week of racing.

Hopefully, I can catch up with the same people at next year's July Racing Carnival and make it three in a row.
