Grafton Ghosts keen to avenge historical grand final loss

GRAFTON Ghosts' inaugural season against Coffs Harbour clubs is one that is forever looked on as a missed opportunity.

The year was 1963 and the newly formed club had put together strong seasons in first and reserve grade, with both teams reaching the grand final.

History tells both sides lost, with the late Clem Rankin-led first grade side losing the 1964 grand final as well.

The club moved to Group 1 in 1966, and played in that competition every year until 2013 with varied success.

Their move to Group 2 has reinvigorated interest in local rugby league.

Mitch Lollback's return pushes promising youngster Matt Muller to the wing, with the addition of Ryan Binge set to add more go-forward to an already outstanding pack.

It is a wealth of riches coach Ryan Farrell hopes will propel his squad to the finals.

"There's heaps of really good players knocking on the door," Farrell said.

"Players like Josh Donohue and Kieran Stewart are definitely up there but we'll be keeping our eye on a few blokes.

"We're going in blind this week. We know nothing about Macksville so we'll approach them as if they're one of the top two teams in the comp."

Ghosts travel to Macksville tomorrow. Under-18s kick off at 12pm with first grade scheduled for 2.45pm.
