Giant sinkhole threaten's Malcolm Turnbull's suburb
A SINKHOLE has formed in the exclusive suburb of Point Piper - just 500m from Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's family home - as the mop up from yesterday's freak storms continues.
Recent wet weather is a suspected cause of the driveway sinkhole, which is the size of a backyard pool, measuring about 15m by 10m by 10m.
Firefighters were called to Wentworth St after reports of a "gas smell" in the area this morning, and police ordered the evacuation of four nearby properties, two of which were occupied.
"We got called to the scene about 7.10am about a gas smell near a sinkhole believed to be caused by rain overnight," a spokeswoman for Fire and Rescue NSW said.
"There was a smell of gas in the area, and a ruptured gas line and I think a burst water pipe were discovered.

"The crew on the scene have decided to lower someone in, to shut the gas off, and then have continued to monitor gas levels.
"There was obviously an exclusion zone around the area at the time, and roads closed, but our crews have left the scene now and handed the site back to council."
A spokeswoman for Woollahra Council said geotechnical engineers were on their way to the site to assess its stability.
She said the whole of Wentworth St has been closed to traffic.
"Traffic is being diverted around the site and detours are available," she said.
No damage to cars or injuries have been reported.
