Girl wore jeans to bed in attempt to stop alleged abuse

A YOUNG girl took to wearing jeans and a belt to bed in an attempt to stop the ongoing sexual abuse by her mother's partner, a Rockhampton District Court jury was told yesterday.

The confronting details were heard on the opening day of the trial of the man, who is charged with one count of maintaining a sexual relationship with a child, one count of rape and one count of attempted rape.

The girl was aged eight and nine when the alleged offences happened in Rockhampton in 2004 and 2005.

Over that period, the defendant at times lived with the family.

In the opening address, Crown prosecutor Susan Hedge detailed how the defendant would go into the girl's room late at night, when everyone else was asleep.

The girl would be woken by her pants being pulled down before the defendant allegedly assaulted her.

After some time, the alleged victim started to wear jeans and a belt to bed but that did not stop the abuse.

Miss Hedge said the sexual abuse did not only happen in the bedroom.

The alleged rape happened mid-morning when the girl was lying on a couch; the alleged attempted rape in 2005 when the girl was alone with the accused in his home.

The trial continues.
