FIRST looks at a Gladstone-based business survey show that small businesses have benefited from the boom and will struggle through the downturn.

Almost 80 businesses have so far taken part in the Gladstone Chamber of Commerce and Industry Boom or Bust survey, launched on November 12.

GCCI president Rick Hansen said a comprehensive survey would enable the chamber to advocate to the local, state and federal governments on what small businesses need in town.

"We want to get solid results that will paint a clear picture of how we're going here in town," he said.

"There are questions on how they're travelling now and how they think they'll travel in the future."

Buy Local campaign manager Crystal McGregor said the survey for small to medium-sized businesses would be available online until mid-January.

"There's so much hearsay on businesses doing great and other people saying there're heaps of businesses that have closed down, we just want to have a look at the big picture," she said.

Looking at their financial position, 55% of businesses had benefited from the boom, while 31% had not and 13% were unsure. But when asked whether their business had experienced adverse affects, 49% had, 38% hadn't and 12% were unsure.

Business workforce outlook for the next 12 months showed that 62% were looking to retain their workforce, 20% would increase their workforce, while 16% would reduce their workforce.

Ms McGregor said the results were still preliminary and a larger number of the businesses in the Gladstone region were encouraged to take part in the survey.
