Global mining technology giant coming to Rockhampton

GLOBAL mining technology giant Siemens is coming to Rockhampton in a welcome show of confidence in the region.

It will open a dedicated service centre in Kawana to give local mining operations access to highly specialised engineering services, equipment, spare parts and technicians.

And in other positive news for Central Queensland, 50 to 100 jobs will be created at a timber milling operation at Bondoola, near Yeppoon.

Capricorn Enterprise economic development manager Neil Lethlean said it was "brilliant news" in these uncertain times.

He said that Siemens' expansion into Rockhampton provided a timely boost given the recent downturn in the resources sector.

"The ripple effect to associated industry will be enormous," he said, indicating the company's presence could prove an investment magnet for Central Queensland.

Siemens' 1500 sq m centre is one of only a few original equipment manufacturers' (OEM) workshops in the vicinity of the Bowen, Galilee and Surat basins.

The company's service manager Paul Bulloch said a demand for productivity improvements was a key driver behind the move.

Siemens had also been awarded a contract to provide 27 drive-train packages for Anglo American's newest greenfield project, Grosvenor.

Mr Bulloch said the Rockhampton centre would provide a local hub for the drive-train packages, essentially the crucial "arteries" moving coal around the mines.

The Siemens' announcement follows news that Timber Marshalling Services (TMS) will generate 50 to 100 jobs at its Bondoola milling operation.

Mr Lethlean said the Tasmanian-based company had secured supply from timber plantations at Byfield and Monto.
