Goal-shy Leckie looks for improvement

MATHEW Leckie has been one of the key performers in the Socceroos recent matches but one thing is missing from his performances - goals.

Leckie, who enjoyed a breakout World Cup in Brazil, has not scored for the national team since finding the net against Canada more than a year ago.

The FC Ingolstadt striker said he was keen to improve on that record, starting with tomorrow morning's friendly against Qatar in Doha.

"I've only scored one in 15 games so I would definitely like to score more," Leckie told FFA TV.

"I had the chances the other night (against United Arab Emirates) which I could have put away, but it wasn't to be that day. Hopefully I can get into some scoring opportunities again (against Qatar) and I've just got to be more clinical.

"At this stage it's probably what the whole team is lacking - that final pass or finish. As a team we have to make that better … if we keep creating the chances that should happen."

The game against Qatar will be Australia's 500th international match. The first took place in Dunedin in New Zealand in June 1922, with the Aussies losing 3-1.
