GoFundMe ‘cancer scam’ donaters will be refunded

EVERYONE who donated to an alleged cancer fundraising scam will have their money refunded.

Yesterday Lucy Victoria Wieland, 27, was charged with one count of fraud for dishonestly obtaining property from another.

She faced Townsville Magistrates Court and received bail.

Police will allege Wieland lied about having stage five ovarian cancer and created a GoFundMe page which raised nearly $55,000.

A GoFundMe spokeswoman said the campaign was reported to their team, the user was banned, and all donors would be refunded.

"We are already working with local law enforcement to assist in the investigation," she said.

"In general, if someone fabricates a medical diagnosis or other circumstances in hopes of raising money, their behaviour will ultimately be reported and appropriate action will be taken.

"We have a community of over 50 million users - when a story is shared and the community sees something they think might not be right, they tell us, and our team investigates."

The spokeswoman said if an alleged fraud took place on GoFundMe, donors were protected and donations were refunded.

"Our team works with law enforcement to report issues and assists them in investigations," she said.

"It important to remember that misuse is extremely rare on our platform."

GoFundMe said all donors should feel confident in making a donation.

"Campaigns with any misuse make up less than one tenth of one per cent of all campaigns," the spokeswoman said.

"GoFundMe is the safest place to give and users are fully protected."
