Scott aiming to master Royal Melbourne

GOLF: Adam Scott says he wants to dominate at the Australian Masters in the same way Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson do in the US Masters at Augusta.

Scott became the first Australian to win at Augusta when he took out this year's edition, and said winning the Australian Masters at Kingston Heath in 2012 had been a key part of that success.

"It was big for the confidence and absolutely played a part in any success since then," he said at Royal Melbourne yesterday.

"People say you haven't achieved everything in golf unless you've won the Open at St Andrew's.

"But for an Australian, I think to win a tournament at Royal Melbourne is the same kind of thing and I'd love to do that."

Scott was due to tee off early this morning with countrymen Marc Leishman and Jack Wilson, the latter a surprise third-placed finisher behind Scott and American Rickie Fowler in last week's Australian PGA Championship on the Gold Coast.

One of the star attractions in the afternoon field will be Vijay Singh, who is partnered with Australia's Scott Hend and Perth International winner Jin Jeong.

US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy will tee off with Zimbabwean Brendon De Jonge and sentimental favourite Jarrod Lyle in the following group.
