Golf and business: how you play the game

AFTER a round of golf on the remarkably beautiful Brookwater Golf Club, I was sitting back and absorbing the surroundings while watching a PGA Golf Tournament on the big screen. It occurred to me how a PGA Professional is very much like an entrepreneurial businessman.

Top professional golfers are more than talented athletes - they have to continue to develop their talent as well as manage their marketing, administration, organisation and finances. In other words, the perennial entrepreneurial challenge that the average small to medium businessmen face is often no different to a professional athlete. So the key is to continue to find strategic leadership or operational excellence. This is always front and centre to their mindset.

In business as well as golf, it's the people that make it a good experience whether you are a player or a spectator. Often when you are in business with partners, it's no different from playing a round with a good friend. It's important that they respect the rules and appreciate your level of etiquette while still challenging you to achieve better results for yourself and vice versa.

Over the years we have come to appreciate the level of power and skill from players like Rory McIlroy who can smash his 3-wood 220 metres, or Bubba Watson hooking out from behind a tree over the sand traps to safely land onto the green. While Tiger Woods is still trying to overcome his fall from grace from his off-field antics he has a way to go.

At Sothertons our goal is to help businesses achieve better results by providing strategic and operational excellence. If you would like more information contact the professionals at Sothertons on 4972 1300.
