Goodwin rides hard for last remaining national team spots

WARWICK rider David Goodwin will have to hope the selectors go his way when they name the Australian team for the World Equestrian Games starting next month in France.

Top ranked Australian Edwina Tops-Alexander was already in the team before qualifiers over the past two weekends.

Last year's Australian Show Jumping Champion, Jamie Kermond and London 2012 Olympic team reserve, Amy Graham have satisfied the requirements of automatic nomination to the Australian Jumping Team at the qualifiers.

Selection will now name the final two members of the team from the remaining short-list of five, including Goodwin.

Goodwin had a best of 51st in a field of 78 at Spangenberg, Germany, at the weekend where he accumulated eight penalties on Warrego Jericho. He recently starred for Australia in the Nations Cup in Europe.

Graham and Kermond are the top two ranked riders after Australia's two round nomination series which started a week ago in Mons (Belgium) with eight short listed combinations.

The series required riders to compete in a qualifying round and Grand Prix at both the Mons CSI Four-Star and Spangenberg (GER) Three-Star events. Both combinations accumulating no more than 20 penalties on the way.

Leading into the Spangenberg Grand Prix, Graham and Kermond were the only riders still eligible for automatic nomination. Graham had some breathing space with 11 penalties in-hand, but the pressure was on Kermond who only had three penalties spare.

Both were outstanding in a field of 50, especially Graham and mount Bella Baloubet.
