Grand final of under-17s champs
THE NSW under-17 team, featuring Grafton's Tahlia Goodwin, will go head-to-head with traditional foe Victoria, in the grand final of the 2011 Under-17 National Netball Championship at the Logan Metro Indoor Sports Centre today.
A 10-goal victory over home-town favourite Queensland, 34-24 in the semi-final this morning was enough to see the NSW team through to the decider, which tips off at 12.45pm.
The victory was highlighted by the superb accuracy of shooters Kristina Brice (Baulkham Hills) and Kaitlyn Bryce (Fairfield City) who shot 22 goals at 88% and 12 goals at 92% accuracy respectively.
This is the second consecutive year the NSW team has qualified for the Grand Final, however this year they face a Victorian side that has gone through undefeated with only 138 goals scored against them.
“We know what we're coming up against tomorrow. Victoria is a well-drilled team and they've probably got a couple of things up their sleeve that we haven't seen yet,” NSW coach Briony Akle said.
“If we can keep our cool and play our game rather than being caught up in what they do then I think we'll be ok.”
Akle believes that the loss NSW suffered early in the rounds against Victoria has actually set them up well for the back end of the tournament.
“Having the loss during the week was a good thing, because it gave us the opportunity to sit down and go through what was going wrong and also look at the things that we were doing well. By the end of the tournament we've peaked at the right time so it's exciting,” she said.
