FIREFIGHTERS battled a grass fire which broke out near the South Grafton Aerodrome for over two hours yesterday afternoon.

The blaze destroyed three hectares on the corner of Abbott St and Aspinall Lane.

Dennis Pye, station commander of the South Grafton fire station said prevailing westly winds hampered efforts to contain the blaze.

"The grass fire worsened due to the unfavourable conditions," he said.

"RFS crews from Waterview Heights and Grafton were called to

"The fire went close to the hangers at the aerodrome but luckily they were protected."

Commander Pye said only short grass and vegetation was burned during the blaze.

He added more than 10 firefighters fought to bring the blaze under control.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
