Group 2 Redbacks feel bite of Group 3 in annual league clash
GROUP 2 has gone down 44-20 to Group 3 in the annual inter-Group meeting at Lank Bain Reserve in Wauchope.
The sides went try for try in the first half to wind up level at 14-all by intermission.
But back-to-back crossings soon after the resumption gave the southern team an edge and they capitalised on their lead with the Redbacks forced to play catch-up for the remainder.
"Group 3 scored off a pair of 40-20 kicks from Anthony Cowan and they kept punching up on the back of some big hits up the middle from their front-rower Mitch Fowler," assistant coach Warren Gilkinson said.
"Those blokes pretty much dominated the game, which made it difficult to sort out a North Coast side at the end.
"Our Group 2 boys were fairly stressed from the start.
"After so many changes through injury since we picked the first side and another four ruled out at the last training session, the build-up wasn't as good as in previous years.
"Still that's how rep footy works and we'll come back again next year and give it everything we've got."
Despite the loss, Group 2 came up with seven selections in the squad of 18 North Coast players to contest the Country Rugby League championships in Gosford on June 14.
The team will train in Coffs Harbour under coach Phil Trembath this Wednesday.
