Hockey Championships under way
THE New South Wales CHS (Combined High Schools) Girls Hockey Championships got under way at the Grafton Hockey Complex yesterday with more than 140 players taking part.
CHS State convener Jacqui Charlton said the three days of competition should produce entertaining hockey, and the skill levels displayed by the girls on day one was an indication girls’ hockey in NSW is healthy as ever.
“We have about 140 players from 10 regions competing at the Carnival, and the standard is right up there with previous years,” Charlton said.
“You could say the girls have probably got better stick skills, and with the new rules the game is a lot faster, so fitness is a big component.”
North Coast are still in the hunt for a semi-final berth tomorrow after producing a win and a draw yesterday, but will need to defeat Sydney East today and possibly an undefeated South Coast outfit.
Charlton said picking an overall winner was a difficult task, but expects North West and South Coast to both challenge strongly for the title.
“It is hard to pick who will play in the final. It changes every year; there is a lot of turnover,” Charlton said.
“Some teams have a couple of rebuilding years and some will have half-a-dozen Year 12 girls who have been at the carnival for a few years, which makes a difference.
“It tends to ebb and flow, but at this stage North West have two wins and South Coast also looked strong.”
North Coast disposed of Riverina 5-0 but struggled against Western to salvage a 2-2 draw.
Today’s game against South Coast will be a huge test for North Coast, but before that they’ll need to contend with a Sydney East side who went down narrowly to South Coast 2-0 yesterday.
The event runs until tomorrow at the Grafton hockey fields.
