Harwood keep dream alive

LCCA CRICKET: Harwood has kept its grand final hopes alive after they scored an eight-wicket win over Maclean United in the semi-final of the LCCA competition.

For much of the season Harwood has struggled to hang on to its chances, but with the season on the line, Harwood veteran opener Geoff Simmons said the team would leave nothing to chance.

"We bowled well and fielded really well, which was the secret to winning," Simmons said.

"The lads have been bowling well all year, but sometimes the results just haven't been there, but we made the most of our opportunities.

"The wicket was in our favour at the start, it was tricky to bat on early but it got better as the day went on."

Leading the way with the ball for Harwood was Mitchell Niemiec, picking up 4-18 off seven overs. While Craig Moran (47) fought hard for his team the wickets fell around him as United finished its innings on 8-145.

Harwood lost only two wickets in its run chase as openers Josh Cormick (64) and Simmons (54) set the platform for the win.

Reaching the target in just 24 overs, Simmons said it was a pleasing win.

"Josh batted really well the last couple of weeks so it was good to see him keep batting well," he said.

"It helps the team when you're scoring some runs. It felt good to get some runs as well, though I was a bit scratchy."

With Iluka coming off the back of a loss against Wanderers and missing an opportunity to go straight through to the grand final, Simmons said Harwood would have to be on top of its game if it was to beat Iluka and earn a grand final berth.

"We will have to play really well to beat them. They've been going good this year and are a hard team to beat, but if we play well we will give them a show," he said.

"This win gives us a lot of confidence, and we're confident we can beat Iluka."
