Haunting reminder of lives lost 12 years ago on September 11

IT'S only September 10 in the US - but already a haunting atmosphere and sense of solemn sadness has taken over New York as the city approaches the 12-year anniversary of the Twin Towers tragedy.

APN reporter Emily Prain, who is currently in the US, said an eerie atmosphere had taken over the National September 11 Memorial.

" It was very sobering and haunting," she said.

"They put a rose on each name when it's their birthday which is lovely."

Miss Prain said she was astounded when she found out the heavy security in the area wasn't because of the anniversary, but simply because of how cautious people had become since the attacks.

"The security surrounding the memorial and America in general is phenomenal," she said.

"Streets, like Wall St, are barricaded with heavy police presence.

"I thought something must have been going on but when I asked a security guard, he said it has been like that since 9/11."

Miss Prain said even though time had passed, fear was still etched into the hearts and minds of New Yorkers.

"It's like the city is still living in fear more than a decade after the attacks," she said.

"It definitely makes you appreciate our home."

A tragedy that will never be forgotten

  • 2983 men, women and children perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993.
  • Oldest victim was 85 years old; the youngest was two.
  • More than 400 were first responders who died performing their sworn duties.
  • There's a north pool and south pool.
  • The arrangement of names is based on layers of "meaningful adjacencies" that reflect where the victims were on 9/11 and the relationships they shared with others who were lost on that day.
