AFTER escaping police officers in Noosa by swimming into the ocean -- and prompting a massive search -- Ricky Gardner has handed himself in south of the border.

Police launched a major search operation that spanned two days after Gardner, 37, escaped officers by entering the waters at Noosa's Main Beach on January 9.

Photos of a gold-coloured Holden wagon were released by police who, after a fruitless ocean search, began searching land.

Gardner has handed himself into a police station in northern New South Wales overnight.

He is now being questioned by police.

In January, Superintendent Darryl Johnson told reporters it was unclear if Gardner had survived his bold escape attempt.

"He was last seen swimming away from the beach - lost sight of [him] but it was dark," he said.

"We are hoping that he returned to shore safely - if we can ascertain that, we would be very appreciative."
