Head close to call-up, says Australian coach

CRICKET: Australia coach Darren Lehmann says rising star Travis Head will soon get his chance at Test level despite leaving him out of the squad to tour India later this month.

Lehmann has liked what he has seen from the South Australian captain.

"He's impressed us immensely with the way he's adapted to international cricket," he said.

"We expect him in the not-too-distant future to get his chance in Test cricket."

Head looked a near certainty to make the 16-man squad for the India Test series.

The 23-year-old has had one of his best seasons in the 12 months since making his international debut in the 2016 Australia Day Twenty20 against India at Adelaide Oval.

Head also got a first start in One-Day Internationals in June and made the team ahead of the more established Glenn Maxwell for much of the year

He played as an opener in a couple of games against Pakistan and now boasts an ODI average of 37.20 from 22 games.

Head made scores of 50-plus in three of his past four innings for Australia, including a maiden ton in Adelaide.

The off-spinner also picked 11 ODI wickets and also scored a ton in his last Sheffield Shield game.

Lehmann said his performances almost got him on the plane.

"It was a really tight call," he said.

"Obviously he's done really well in the one-day series for us.

"His bowling has gone through the roof, so really pleased for him there and he batted really well again (in Sunday's ODI series decider against New Zealand).

"You can only take so many and we've got a lot of left-handers in the squad as well."

Head is in the squad for the T20 series against Sri Lanka later this month and will then return to Sheffield Shield action.
