Health experts want more cash for upgrade

BALLINA Hospital would receive $7.3 million to build an operating theatre and upgrade its emergency department under a Labor government.

The Commonwealth has already committed $4.5 million towards a new theatre, but doctors have criticised the figure for being too low.

Ballina Labor candidate Paul Spooner said an extra $2.3 million investment would bring the theatre up to the national standard.

"I've been listening to local health experts and advocates about getting the health infrastructure at Ballina Hospital right," he said.

The remaining $5 million would be spent on emergency department upgrades.

Mr Spooner will face Nationals candidate for Ballina Kris Beavis in the March 28 election - a man Premier Mike Baird yesterday called "a perfect candidate".
