Heats provide a hot tip for today's greyhound final
HEAT winners Winning Hearts and Remember Me Rose loom as likely favourites in the final of the Betfair Blue Paws Maiden series at the Grafton Greyhound Racing Club this afternoon.
The event highlights a strong 12-event program.
Today however the Des Gilroy-trained Winning Hearts and Trevor Salmoni's Remember Me Rose appear to have the race between themselves.
Winning Hearts entered the series with two placings from three appearances at Albion Park and he was very impressive in his heat, showing great early acceleration off box 8 to cut across the field in recording a handy 17.65 seconds for the 305m journey.
The move to box 3 in the final should not be a problem as there appears to be a lack of early speed boxed around him.
Remember Me Rose was the one they all wanted to be on in her heat and she was never in any danger, spearing straight to the lead before winning in 17.60 seconds.
The daughter of Where's Pedro and Roseberry Rose jumped from box 7 on that occasion and will do so again today but her chances will hinge on her ability to cross Winning Hearts in the early stages.
Corindi Beach trainer Gary Peel retired from the greyhound game when he moved to the beachside suburb a couple of years ago but he was unable to shake the urge and soon found himself in search of another greyhound to keep he and his wife Michelle active.
The greyhound he found was also resuming from some time off and after eight months on the sidelines Red Chief returned with an eye-catching second to Gunna Fire last week over 407m.
Red Chief began nicely from box 3 but did encounter some interference when finishing nicely for the minor prize.
Today he steps up to the 480m journey and from box 1 he appeals as one of the better bets of the day.
Dave Irwin has a smart young greyhound in his care by the name of Just Imposing however he has raced without luck in his three career outings with moderate beginnings being his undoing.
In each of those starts Just Imposing has been at the tail of the field at some point before rocketing home when clear with the biggest margin he has finished from the winner being 3.75 lengths.
With any luck in running at all this afternoon Just Imposing should score his first win with the Rick Godwin-trained Twinks McCool the main danger.
