Help rescue the crew that may rescue you
A FAR cry from the regular emergency calls and death-defying rescues, the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter team will today be sipping on lattes at Toast Espresso in Grafton.
While their phones will remain switched on and ready for action, today is about raising money so they can continue to do just that.
Rescue Helicopter Service general manager Kris Beavis said Rescue Day was a chance for the community to help 'rescue' the service with donations to keep choppers in the air.
"When people donate in support of Rescue Day, they are making themselves a big part of the rescue and are helping us to give hope to the patients we fly," he said.
"I can tell you first hand that when I see a patient's stretcher being loaded into a rescue helicopter at the helibase, it's humbling to think of the many people who have contributed in so many ways to help make that next flight possible.
"Rescue Day is also our chance to say thank you to the community for the valuable role that they play in ensuring that the rescue helicopters can be there when it counts."
At Toast Espresso today, the crew will sell specially branded merchandise including their new unmistakable propeller hats, helicopter calendars and money boxes.
