Kids and social media: How young is too young?

KIDS on social media is always a hot topic, no matter how old you are. This week we asked mums: how young is too young for a social media account?

One mum from Maclean, Tiffany Cooper, said 13 was probably a good age to let kids start using social media.

"All kids are trying to be adults while they're young aren't they?"

But Sonya Wall said her daughter was 11 and she had been using it for 12 months.

"I don't think any earlier than that is necessary," she said.

However, all the mums agreed it can be dangerous for kids online, especially when they don't understand the implications of talking to people they don't know.

"There is a difference between communicating with friends and knowing that's why you are using social media to 'making new friends' who might be dangerous people," Bridget Isichei said.

Mums in the Clarence Valley wanted their kids to have the freedom to communicate with friends but still know that talking to stangers was dangerous.
