High speed pursuit ends in foot chase on university campus
A DRIVER is in custody awaiting charges from police after he led officers on a high-speed pursuit of up to 160km/h around Lismore.
The accused behind the wheel of the offending silver Mitsubishi Magna was a 26-year-old from Goonellabah.
Richmond Local Area Command officers said they sighted the driver in Casino St, South Lismore about 12.30pm.
Police said the driver allegedly sped off when police approached the car to undertake a routine vehicle stop.
A wide-spread chase unfolded as police pursued the driver from South Lismore, onto the Bruxner Hwy and then out to the Coraki Rd end of Lismore, out to Wyrallah and back into Lismore.
The pursuit came to a dramatic end in Foley Close when the accused crashed the car.
In a final effort to evade police, the 26-year-old driver allegedly fled the smashed car on foot when he jumped residential fences and ran across onto the Southern Cross University campus.
He was arrested on the university grounds a short time later.
Police said the man is known to police.
