Traffic update: Highway queue reaches 5km long

UPDATE 3.10pm: QUEUES have reached 5km long just south of Woodburn, putting total travel time through that stretch at around 30 minutes.

It's still an improvement from yesterday, which saw the queue peak at 11km in length.

Meanwhile traffic has eased on Ewingsdale Rd at Byron Bay.

UPDATE 12.50pm: ONCE again queues are building up at Woodburn as traffic passes through from the south.

Live Traffic NSW reported a 2km queue adding 20 minutes to one's journey through the town.

There's also delays near Byron Bay: "Traffic's heavy eastbound on Ewingsdale Rd from the Pacific Hwy, allow extra travel time," a Live Traffic NSW tweet read.

If you're stuck in traffic, you could try one of these things to pass the time:

  • Listen to an audio book
  • Put on your favourite music: Either sing through your kids' complaints or encourage them to sing along with you
  • Play I-Spy
  • Plan tonight's dinner
  • Plan tomorrow's day of holiday activities
  • If your holiday has come to an end, take turns sharing your three favourite holiday moments.

UPDATE Thursday 10.30am: HOLIDAY travellers approaching yesterday's highway nightmare spot can expect a mostly clear run this morning.

There are no reports of delays between New Italy and Woodburn, but the Google Maps live traffic map shows some delays building up just outside of town.

So far there is only one Pacific Highway traffic warning present across the state.

"Macksville: Northbound holiday traffic is building on the Pacific Hwy - queues of 4km. Allow an extra 20 minutes travel time," a Live Traffic NSW tweet from 10 minutes ago read.

UPDATE 3.40pm: TRAVEL time along a congested Pacific Highway stretch has dropped to about 30 minutes from 50 minutes an hour ago.

Live Traffic NSW reported an 11km queue south of Woodburn, beginning just north of New Italy.

UPDATE 2.20pm: WHILE traffic around the state seems to be easing, the build-up at Woodburn has grown in size.

The Google Maps live traffic map shows heavy traffic from Woodburn all the way down to New Italy.

This stretch normally takes about 10 minutes to complete, however due to holiday traffic drivers can expect it to take five times as long.

Southbound traffic is still clear.

Meanwhile Pacific Highway travellers near Pottsville can expect delays due to a grass fire near the Clothiers Creek Rd exit.

The grass fire was reported at 12.42pm.

Emergency services are on scene. Motorists are advised to reduce speed and exercise caution.

UPDATE 1pm: THE delay on the Pacific Highway has been updated to 8km, Live Traffic NSW has reported.

Motorists are advised they will experience delays of 35 minutes.

WEDNESDAY 12.20pm: A SEVEN kilometre delay on the Pacific Highway is holding up drivers returning home after their Christmas break.

Live Traffic NSW has reported northbound queues of up to 7km heading into Woodburn.

The Google Maps live traffic map shows congestion begins after the Nortons Rd exit and continues until the town centre.

From there the traffic seems to completely clear.

Google Maps shows fast passage for southbound travellers.
