Drivers eye glory in round two of Hill Climb championships

SIMON McDonald will be hoping to take the spoils at Mountain View this Sunday in his improved Holden Commodore.

The Casino driver has upgraded from a V6 to V8 engine in a bid to take out Class 6 in round two of the Grafton Sporting Car Club Championship.

McDonald is part of a Holden domination of Class 6, with 11 out of 13 competitors being General Motors models.

Competitors to watch for will be James Morrison and Marty Jordan, as well as the father-and-son team of Dick and Michael Hughes.

Round one in March went to Karl Hughes in a Commodore with a time of 53.50 seconds.

Class 9 will most likely see the 11 competitors fight it out for class honours, as well as the fastest time of the day, in a mixture of Formula Libres and specials.

Dave Morrow would usually be driving his Krugger, in which he scorched the track in the day's fastest time of 46.65 seconds last time out. Instead, he will be swapping cars for his Seco Clubman.

Morrow will come up against the VW Buggy Special of Tom Hackett, Darren Read at the wheel of Minetti ZZ1 sports car, 2013 club champion Daryl Watt in the Force PC and co-drivers debuting their 2014 Honda Black Arrow Superkart, David and Nathan Quelch.

Two other competitors hard on their heels will be Brett Wilkins in his Sport Mitsubishi and Geoff Limbert in the Cobra.

Coffs Harbour local Miles Hoare will race in his Formula Renault Hoare and is one of many drivers looking to gain valuable practice in the lead-up to round five of the NSW Hillclimb Championship to be held at Mountain View over the June long weekend.

A field of 60 competitors across 10 classes will attempt to break personal-best records, take outright class honours and familiarise ahead of the state round.

Class 3, for road-registered limited modifications up to 2000cc, will include two family battles between Bill and Matthew Cowper in the Toyota Sprinter and Brock and Sonya Wilson in the Toyota MR2.

Class 5, for 3J club cars up to 2000cc, will showcase the battles of husband-and-wife teams Heath and Christine Campbell, of Glenreagh, with Bill and Jenni Heuchmer, of Ballina, in their VW Beetle and Toyota Corolla, respectively.

Sports Sedans over 2000cc showcases a variety of vehicles - Jack Quelch in his Ford-powered NSU Prinz, Rodney Bryant in the VW Beetle, Leonard Falknau in a Datsun Bluebird and local Ryan McSwan in his Holden Torana LX.

Come along to Mountain View Motor Sport Complex at 262 Clarence Way from 9.30am on Sunday. Entry is free. Full canteen facilities and amenities are available, and you can also browse the pits.
