Hockey action begins to heat up
THE summer holidays are over but the action is starting to heat up with hockey making its way back into the Clarence Valley spotlight.
On Saturday, the first South Grafton Ex-Services meeting of the year will be held at 1.30pm. Every club must have a representative at this meeting with two proposals on the agenda – one for a Premier League competition between Coffs Harbour and Grafton for A-grade teams and the other for the introduction of a junior development officer who would promote and assist the younger competitions.
Other items on the agenda will be filling positions left vacant after the AGM for an assistant secretary and two representative officers. If anyone has any changes to the by-laws they must be handed to the secretary.
During the summer, the region’s talented players have not been resting, with the North Coast Academy of Sport hosting five weekends of training. Anna Brotherson, Phoebe Brotherson, Jessica Edwards, Dimity Grainger, Casey Irwin, Madeleine Kinnear, Kirralee Monkhouse, Olivia Morrison, Rachelle Pole and Madeleine Richey have all been sweating it out.
From these sessions, Rachelle was invited to attend a training weekend for goalkeepers. She obviously impressed the organisers and was invited to try out for the NSW under-18 squad – which she was chosen in. The squad will play from April 13-24 in Port Lincoln, South Australia.
Turf training times were allocated to clubs at a meeting last week. Bruce Carle needs to be notified by all clubs as to when teams will begin their training on the turf.
Selectors will begin looking at players for representative squads this weekend. The under-15 selection trials will be at 4.30pm at the hockey fields on February 7, 14 and 21. A cost of $2 will cover turf fees. Players need to be available to travel to Taree for May 8-9.
